Please be advised the New York City Department of Education Science Safety Manual for Grades 6–12 has been updated and is now available on WeTeach; this manual replaces the 2008 Science Safety Manual version for grades 6–12. Note that the 2008 Science Safety Manual is still applicable for grades K–5.

The new NYCDOE Science Safety Manual Grades 6–12 is designed for secondary school administrators, science teachers, laboratory specialists, and other staff working with secondary science classes. It provides guidance around safe and ethical procedures for science teaching and learning—including information on City, State, and federal regulations for science laboratories, investigations, and experiential learning activities.

It also contains information about obtaining, using, storing, and disposing of chemicals and materials used for science and STEM activities, and provides a set of relevant links, forms, and other resources to support science safety.

For questions, email STEM@schools.nyc.gov with the subject line, “Science Safety Manual.”
